Get on board. Gain the skills you need to get out on the water—whether you’re just starting or you’re ready for adventure.

Stand-up paddleboard classes

Basic SUP Skills, Advanced Flatwater SUP Skills, River 1 SUP Skills and Touring 1 SUP skills are Paddle Canada courses that will help you develop your confidence and techniques, no matter your current level. Participants who successfully complete one of these courses will receive a Paddle Canada skills certificate.

Basic SUP Skills

Learn to paddle safely in calm, sheltered waters. A great course whether you’re starting from zero or want to fine-tune the basics.

Learn about:

  • Standing up

  • Paddle strokes

  • Safety equipment

  • Falling and remounting safely

  • Water safety

  • Proper sizing and use of paddle

  • Understanding weather

Advanced Flatwater SUP Skills

This course if for people with previous experience who want to master more advanced skills—whether to go on day trips, paddle in more advanced conditions, race, or just have even more fun on a board.

Learn about:

  • Efficient and advanced strokes

  • Launching and paddling in wind and waves

  • Pivot turns

  • Bracing

  • Edging

  • Foot positions

  • Towing

  • Environment

  • Risk assessment and management

Prerequisite: Basic SUP Skills or equivalent experience

River 1 SUP Skills

Have flatwater SUP experience and want to start paddling and surfing in moving water? This course is for you!

Learn about:

  • Paddling while kneeling, sitting and standing

  • Foot positions

  • Edging

  • Eddy turns

  • Front ferry

  • Surfing

  • Bow draw

  • Falling off and remounting safely

  • Use of a leash

  • River signals

  • River hazards

  • River-specific gear

  • Safety equipment

  • River reading

SUP Yoga

SUP yoga is both relaxing and a challenging full-body workout. Enjoy a float on calm, sheltered water, while working on your balance in a way you can’t find in a standard yoga class.

SUP Yoga is not a Paddle Canada course.

Touring 1 SUP Skills

Build on your advanced flatwater skills with the knowledge, and navigation and safety skills needed to go on a longer tour.

Learn about:

  • Stroke efficiency for longer distances

  • Launching and paddling in wind and waves

  • Paddling a loaded board

  • Decision making and route planning

  • Weather forecasting

  • Navigation

  • Exposed and sheltered shorlines

  • Touring-specific equipment

  • Safety equipment

  • Group paddling dynamics

  • Communication

  • Basic rescues and towing
